Setraline HCL or Setraline Hydrochloride comes in three most common brand names; Zoloft, Selectra and Eleva.
It is an antidepressant. It is taken as a medication for children and adults who are suffering a great depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic attacks. In some cases, this can also be prescribed by doctors as treatment to headaches, sexual dysfunction and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
Setraline HCL works by increasing the amount of serotonin that is circulating in the human body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain that influences most of its functions. So if Setraline increases the amount of serotonin, it makes the patient think. They get to think of the reasons for their depression and how to get over it.
Getting over one’s depression though should not fully rely on the medication; it should also go hand in hand with counselling. On a more evident function of Setraline, it calms the mind of the patient. Thus, making him think about his problems or whatever caused his depression. However, if it he is not guided with his thoughts, Setraline HCL may also increase suicidal thoughts or actions especially to children, teenagers and young adults who are within their first few months of treatment.
Setraline dosage starts at 50mg for adults and 25mg for children. Like any other drugs or medications, it also has side effects like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, changes in sex drive, constipation, drowsiness, loss of appetite, nervousness, shakiness, sweating and weight changes.
But this drug has other unique side effects that may require the patients to consult their doctor for possible and more serious medical condition. These side effects are seizures or irregular heartbeat, abnormal bleeding or bruising, blurred vision, confusion, fever, and hallucinations.
Looking back on its history, Setraline became one of the most sold medications in the US. Since this is an antidepressant, it can easily be purchased over the counter by a lot of people who thinks they need it. However, it should not be abused. An overdose of sertraline can be as serious as changes to your heartbeat, tremor, coma, delirium, fainting and even death. These problems may occur depending on how much Setraline was taken and what other medications or substances are taken with it.
Looking at the effects of taking Setraline, we most probably know what or how we would end up if we abuse the use of it. So even though it may be purchased easily over the counter, it would still be best to consult our doctor before using it. We also would need to go through counselling if we do not want any brain malfunctions. Having severe psychiatric problems is never easy to deal with. We do not want to end up having one just because we took advantage of trying to ease our depression with sertraline.
Drinking alcoholic beverages and taking any other medications are also not allowed if you are taking sertraline as they increase the possibility of experiencing its side effects.
